Steven Auclair, Chair of the Ventura County Democratic Central Committee (VCDCC) joined us to provide background and materials on Prop 50, and ways to get involved to support the campaign.
Ojai Valley Democratic Club – Minutes, September 28, 2025 Ojai Art Center
Three guests attended, and seven members of the OVDC were present, meeting quorum requirements. The meeting was called to order by VC Dems President Star at 4:40 p.m. The agenda was adopted and the minutes from the previous meeting were unanimously approved.
Since our guest speaker was running late, Star Weivoda opened the discussion on Proposition 50 so members could provide background. One member, familiar with the League of Women Voters, noted that the League initially opposed Prop 50 because of the major effort that had gone into fair redistricting efforts. However, she emphasized that these are not normal times. Democrats in California must lead the way, even while the national Democratic Party struggles with its platform and splinter groups, including RESIST movements, which continue to gain momentum.
Steven Auclair arrived and gave background on the Democratic Central Committee, which he has chaired for approximately five years. He described how, during that time, Republicans have narrowly swept into power on the Board of Supervisors due to organized voting blocs, large campaign contributions, and growing support from firefighters shifting away from democrats. He also touched on SOAR, workforce housing along the Avenue, the unfornate anvote on immigrants rights by VC Superivsors other current political issues.
Another member announced that the Ojai Valley Coalition for Democracy will be gathering at the Y with “Anti Trump” and “Yes on Prop 50” signs on Tuesday and Friday evenings from 5:00–5:30 p.m. Bring your own signs. There is lots of momentum to continue this for at least the next month.
The Treasurer’s Report, submitted by Ivan Chen in his absence, was reviewed. The report noted fines imposed by the FPPC, and was unanimously approved.
Steven Auclair provided canvassing literature, Prop 50 "talking points" (see below) for volunteers, and signs to distribute locally. Also post carding (preprinted in Spanish) packets (150 total) are ready to send out. Renee also picked up eight yard signs, with four already pre-ordered for distribution in Ojai.
Talking Points Yes on Prop 50, THE ELECTION RIGGING RESPONSE ACT
Donald Trump has already hurt California families with tariffs, denied wildfire aid, and ordered mass arrests without warrants.
The 2026 election is our chance to stop him, If we don't act now, DT will seize total power for two more years with no checks and balances.
Led by Governor Gavin Newsom, the YES ON PROP 50 coalition includes: President Barak Obama, Senator Alex Padilla, Senator Adam Schiff, Speaker Emerita Nancy Palosi, election experts, independent redistricting commissioners, the NAACP, California veterans, teachers and nurses.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
Renee Roth, OVDC Secretary
